kisah pencemaran sisa toksik
Minamata disease sometimes referred to as Chisso-Minamata disease, is a neurologicalsyndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning. Symptoms include ataxia, numbness in the hands and feet, general muscle weakness, narrowing of the field of vision and damage to hearing andspeech. In extreme cases, insanity, paralysis, coma and death follow within weeks of the onset of symptoms. A congenitalform of the disease can also affect fetuses in the womb.
Minamata disease was first discovered in Minamata city in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan in 1956. It was caused by the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from the Chisso Corporation's chemical factory, which continued from 1932 to 1968. This highly toxicchemicalbioaccumulated in shellfish and fish in Minamata Bay and the Shiranui Sea, which when eaten by the local populace resulted in mercury poisoning. While cat, dog, pig, and human deaths continued over more than 30 years, the government and company did little to prevent the pollution.
As of March 2001, 2,265 victims had been officially recognised (1,784 of whom had died) and over 10,000 had received financial compensation from Chisso. By 2004, Chisso Corporation had paid $86 million in compensation, and in the same year was ordered to clean up its contamination. On March 29, 2010, a settlement was reached to compensate as-yet uncertified victims.

Enviroment Institute Of Malaysia (EiMAS)
EiMAS Background
EiMAS occupies an area of about 10 acres and it is located within the campus of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi, Selangor. Agreement to construct EiMAS in UKM Campus was concluded with the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the Department of Environment (DOE) and UKM on 30th July 1996.
Construction of EiMAS was managed by the Public Works Department, Malaysia that was also involved with the preparation of the design, tendering and appointment of the contractor and also responsible for monitoring the project. The building was finally completed on 28th May 2001 after a period of 1 year 11 months ad 21 days from the date of acquisition of the site on 7th June 1999.
The establishment of EiMAS is a historical landmark. Apart from enhancing the manpower development programme needed for controling and preventing environmental pollution, EiMAS’s activities will also contribute towards assisting DOE in raising the level of public awareness on the importance of environmental conservation efforts. Programmes implemented by EiMAS will provide opportunities for DOE to partner other interested parties especially the industrial sector in Malaysia, which amongst others are responsible for environmental pollution in the country. Its location and proximity to the institution of higher learning i.e. UKM will also provide the opportunity to establish a close bilateral relation with the university in view of the fact that EiMAS’s activities will need the cooperatin and support on continuos basis from researchers and academia from institutions of higher learning both locally and abroad.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aku tak paham la ape yg surat khabar ni tulis. seksyen 2 Akta Kualiti Alam Sekeliling 1974(AKAS 1974) adalah berkenaan tafsiran dan takda kena mengenapun dengan denda. tapi denda pelanggaran AKAS 1974 kebanyakanya memang dah RM500k. mmg tak paham lahh.
aku rasa pindaan memang dibuat keatas tafsiran supaya penjelasan lebih meluas keatas pelanggaran AKAS 1974. maksudnya pendakwaan pelanggaran AKAS 1974 dapat dimudahkan. pembuktian pelanggaran AKAS 1974 memang susah sikit disebabkan banyaknya prosedur teknikal seperti persampelan dan lain-lain.

Minggu Alam Sekitar Malaysia (MASM) pada 21 oktober setiap tahun
SEJARAH RINGKAS
I. Meningkatkan kesedaran alam sekitar di kalangan orang ramai
II.
